Throughout the month of March Lauren Zinsmeister has done a fantastic
job balancing all her responsibilities and keeping up with everything
she is involved with. March was especially important and challenging for
Lauren since she is doing a three credit hour internship for Florida
State University’s International Center, which requires working in the
office at least 10 hours a week. Lauren’s major project this semester
was running the annual International Bazaar, which took place on March
27th. In additional to organizing, planning, and running the
International Bazaar this month Lauren has also continued to excel in
her job as a receptionist for Ragans Hall, serve as the Treasurer for
Ragans’ Hall Government, and play on the Ragans’ Hall intramural
softball team. One of Lauren’s many duties this month was to organize volunteers for
the International Bazaar. The Bazaar took place on a Saturday and the
actual event went from 2pm-6pm, but Lauren and her volunteers had been
setting up since 9am and stayed at least until 6:30pm when I left the
event. While volunteering for the event and serving food I was able to
witness what a great event the Bazaar actually is. The Bazaar attracted
nearly 600 people, both students and members of the community interested
in culture and tradition. The Bazaar had 15 performances from groups
such as the African Student Union, the Japanese Student Association, the
Tenshin Shoden Martial Arts Society, flamenco dancers and the India
Association of Tallahassee to name a few. Not only has Lauren been
working with all the performers throughout the month of March, but on
the day of the Bazaar there were a few cancellations and last minute
participants that Lauren was able to schedule or reschedule into the
event. In addition to the performers, there were numerous tables with
30+ organizations set up around the venue for students to browse and get
information on. A few organizations in attendance were Hillel at FSU the
Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, The Iranian Association who was doing
fortune telling at their table, the Thai Community who were giving out
Thai tea. Besides her dedication to the International Bazaar, Lauren has worked
10-15 hours every week as a receptionist in Ragans Hall. She has also
attended Hall Government meetings every Wednesday night this month and
continues to focus on her duties as Treasurer. For the month of March
she helped with Hall Government’s ongoing social every Wednesday morning
where they provide donuts and juice to residents from 7am-10:30am.
Lauren also helped with the planning and preparing of an Egg hunt that
was held on the 28th. Although Lauren had a long day on the day before
she was refreshed and ready to go for the Egg Hunt. Lauren also plays
third base for the Ragans Hall Intramural Softball team and has attended
both games this month which gave the team a 4-0 undefeated season. Aside
from everything Lauren has done this month she is also a senior and is
focusing on graduating this spring. Even with everything she is involved
in she still remains a straight A student and maintains her high GPA. It
is my pleasure to nominate Lauren Zinsmeister for Student of the Month
for March 2010.
