Abigail Glavy has gone above and beyond as a Resident Assistant this
month of June. The job of a resident assistant over the summer is
described as ‘easy’ in the sense that residents come and go based on
what summer classes they are taking, and what rooms are left are given
to ‘short-term stays’ or various temporary summer conference guests.
Basically over the summer, community development is placed on the
backburner since the people who reside here change so often. Abigail
has found a way to go far beyond the relaxed expectations given to
her, and has become an evident leader of the Mozart Square residence
hall, despite being a resident assistant elsewhere over the fall and
spring semesters.
Abigail is always wearing a smile on her face, and is not hesitant to
greet anyone at Mozart Square and make them feel like at home. She
befriended many of the summer conference guests (certainly not a
requirement for an RA over the summer), and had many full length and
in depth conversations with them. She has given tours of Mozart Square
like she has lived there all her life, and has been available to the
front desk whenever they need a helping hand. Also, it seems like the
pager goes off only when Abigail is on-call. She has dealt with room
check-ins at 2 AM, room check-outs at 5 AM, fixing smoke detectors
midnight, and even had to write our only incident report thus far this
summer, not to mention having to wake up at 7:45 AM to get ready for
her summer class the very next morning. She has done all of this with
grace and style, and asked for nothing in return. Many have come to
appreciate her good work ethic.
One of the most important things our hall director encourages our
staff to do is to have good relationships with one another, since the
residents change so often. We have a small staff of four Resident
Assistants, so he made staff development our top priority. Abigail
seriously took this and ran with it, and would find any excuse for our
staff to develop. She would suggest simple things like playing board
games or talking outside, as well as interesting things like watching
the entire Twilight series, going to Jupiter House, or getting a free
tarot card reading online. Whatever she does, she is very mindful of
her staff and tries to create opportunities for her staff to develop.
Obviously, Abigail is a very passionate person. She is passionate for
her job, but more importantly, for her school and education. She is a
journalism major in public relations, and is taking a class for that
over the summer. Since her major is PR, her class had to keep up with
current events. Abigail learned of the oil spill, and after much
research and information gathering, something ignited in Abigail to
want to help as much as she can. She started by asking people for
their hair (weird I know), which she would donate to Matter of Trust,
which would help soak up the oil. But now she is in the works of
putting together A Bp Oil Spill Benefit Show, which would fundraise
for the cause, have local bands play, and have a barber on the side to
help people who would like to donate some hair. She dedicated her
entire facebook page to this cause. Ambitious in nature, if Abigail
sets her mind to something, she will accomplish it. She is an ideal
RA. Please reward her efforts with the June Resident Assistant of the
Month Award.
