First year students with the confidence and knowledge of seasoned veterans are hard to
come by. This being said, you would never think that Harrison Redd was a first year student.
He is able to mix his outgoing personality with his tremendous leadership skills to create one
of the best leaders that the University of Arizona has seen. At the end of the spring semester, Harrison was elected to the RHA Executive Board as
the Vice President of Services. Serving this position, he, along with the rest of the executive
board is required to live on campus to work on their executive duties. Harrison took his
position seriously and started working on his responsibilities the day he moved into his
summer housing on campus. During the month of June, Harrison found out that there was
excess in the RHA budget for the fiscal year. Thinking quickly on his feet, Harrison decided to
use that money to benefit future generations of on campus residents by researching two
major purchases. Harrison was able to find a popcorn machine and snow cone machine, two
services that residents check out on a regular basis. He made sure to find the best deals and
presented his research to the rest of the executive board, who approved the purchase.
Harrison just wanted to make sure that all residents would get the most out of their on
campus experience. In addition to his work on the executive board, Harrison also served as a delegate for the
University of Arizona at NACURH 2010 in San Diego. Harrison started his work for the
conference long before the rest of the delegation arrived in Tucson a week before NACURH.
Not only did he help out our NCC, Jillian Andrews, with tasks like shopping for clothespins
and apparel, but also he was in the office everyday making sure everything was prepared for
the long week ahead. Once the rest of the delegation arrived, Harrison did more than was ever expected of
him. Harrison kept morale high by singing and dancing to various songs, teaching new
delegates the cup game, and starting cheers when there were awkward silences. Harrison was
always the first to make plans for the entire delegation to get dinner together, and made sure
to make meaningful relationships with every single delegate. When we arrived in San Diego, Harrison’s enthusiasm only grew. As a second time
delegate, Harrison was always available to answer questions and led the team in various
cheers. His energy helped bring the Best Large School Delegation award to the University of
Arizona! In addition to his tremendous enthusiasm at the conference, Harrison also presented
a program there. His program, “Take the Drama Out of Leadership, Shakespeare Style,” was
chosen as a Top 50 program, a tremendous feat for a first year student! Harrison was able to
take his experience as a Hall Council President and use it to teach other student leaders
across the nation how to work with others. Back on campus, Harrison is an intern for a research professor and is currently taking a
summer school class, however he never lets that get in the way of his executive board
position’s duties. In addition to all that, Harrison was always there for his fellow executive
board members. His room was always the entertainment hub. Not only did he have a fort for
playing his X-Box, but there was also a TiVo and Instant Netflix so everyone was endlessly
entertained. The University of Arizona has seen countless student leaders over the years, but
none as enthusiastic and dedicated as Harrison Redd.
