Mikaela Falwell, is one of our housing department’s greatest leaders.
Besides serving this summer as a resident assistant at San Francisco
State University, Mikaela was a huge asset to our NACURH delegation.
Working as a summer RA, there is more time for resident as well as other
projects. In June Mikaela did just that. When it was time for her
residents to move in, she gave each resident a personalized note
explaining the basic procedures and introducing herself to them. She
has also gotten to know each resident by name and knows interesting
facts about each one of them. During the summer, the RA’s have programming weeks. Both of Mikaela’s
are in July. She has completed planning for them and has advertising
completed. She attends all programs put on by her fellow RA’s to show
support and make sure everything is taken care of. There have been
times when other staff members have needed assistance with covering a
desk, holding the duty phone or assisting new RA’s with administrative
tasks such as Apartment Living Agreements or Room Condition Forms. As one of eight NACURH delegates, Mikaela spent a significant amount of
time in the month of June planning for the conference. While lying on
the beach relaxing, she would be drawing ideas of what to do for the
display or the banner and coming up with new cheers. A lot of what the
delegation used at conference was an idea of hers. Some examples are:
Captain Planet costumes, the display, new school cheers, and coming up
with the swag for swap shop. Being that this was her seventh conference
she was able to provide insight to the entire delegation and especially
our NCC, as this was her first conference. She helped teach them the
cheers and made sure they knew what to pack and what to expect. The
night before the delegation left campus she offered to house delegates
as they had an early flight. Mikaela made sure to bring a mini first
aid kit with her just in case anyone needed them. While at NACURH, in
order to try and earn the school more spirit points she led a group on a
hunt to find sun-god babies and was always sure to observe No-Cheer
zones. The delegation also had a late comer, so Mikaela took the time
to catch her up on everything pre- conference and during, Mikaela took
the time to answer any and all questions the delegates had.
Being the founder of the Sigma Phi Gamma NRHH, Mikaela is always ready
to get down and dirty and plan programs to make NRHH bigger and better
and is starting now, in June, to do so. Each October our Dining Center
has a haunted house, and this year NRHH will be in charge of it. Mikaela has been working diligently to get the basics planned and has
already come up with numerous ideas for it. Part One will be a haunted
house and twisted Carnival for the college students and Part Two, a fun
house, less spooky typical carnival for younger kids. The younger kids
carnival will be turned into a philanthropic event where parents come
and pay to leave their child at the carnival with NRHH members and then
the parents go to a Zumba class. The money raised will be going to
children with cancer. Mikaela has provided much structure and “backbone” to our on-campus
residential community. From preparation, planning, aiding fellow staff
and delegation members alike, it is clear that our campus would not be
the same without her. She is truly hardworking and deserving.
