Kevin Kinney is the most amazing advisor a student could ever ask for.
He stepped up to be the NACURH Delegation Advisor and an advisor for
myself and one other Regional Board member (Jimmy), when our advisor
moved to a different job up campus.
The month of June was a very long month for me. Kevin was always there
for supporting me, checking in and making sure I was okay and had
everything I needed. He would offer to help me in any way, whether it
was offering to pay for my flight or seeing if I just needed to talk he
was always there. He even came in on a Sunday and had lunch with me
because I needed to talk. It meant the world to me to know that he
cared enough about me as a person, and not just as a student he advised
and would come in and spend his Sunday with me.
I thought that the support would end when I left campus and went to San
Diego, but it did not. Even while I was at NACURH, and had our regional
advisor there, Kevin still asked how I was doing. During our final
regional break out I was awarded a Silver Pin as was Jimmy. Both Jimmy
and I are proud to have been awarded the pins, but not nearly as proud
as Kevin. The first day back in the office after NACURH, he told all of
the Professional Staff about our awards and ever since has congratulated
us on receiving them.
As I mentioned earlier, he also stepped up to advise the NACURH
delegation. The delegation was comprised of 3 people who had been to
conferences before and 4 people who had not. In talking with our NRHH
Representative, she was able to give insight on how he supported the
delegation both before and during the conference. Prior to the
conference he made sure that everyone had what they needed as far as
travel arrangements, and all of the appropriate forms and liability
waivers that they needed. Despite most of the delegation going home for
the summer he and the NCC still made sure that everyone would arrive
safely to NACURH. He flew to San Diego with 4 of the delegates. For
these 4 he made sure to get a Shuttle to the airport and that everyone
was ready and pumped to go. Kevin is the kind of advisor who was
genuinely excited to go and have the opportunity to network with other
schools and attend programs and bring back new ideas, just like our
delegates do. He went above and beyond and was constantly making sure
that everyone was okay and knew where they were going and what they were
doing so he could be sure to support them in whatever way possible.
With some of the delegates being new and more timid than others, he made
sure to be outgoing and get them excited and help them see how fun it
could be to network with other schools and to mingle and sit with people
outside of just the delegation. He also made sure to be as enthusiastic
as possible so that the delegation could feed off of his enthusiasm and
make the conference an amazing experience that they would all remember.
The delegates did just that.
Having him step up late in the game and do so much for our school in
June to make sure everyone had an amazing conference and a stress free
experience is the reason he is deserving of the Advisor Of The Month
award.
