"If a plant cannot live according to its nature, it dies; and so a man."
- Henry David Thoreau. It is truly a beautiful thing when one has blossomed so much over the
year. Nick Canaday has become one such person where it cannot be denied
his nature has truly taken over both his work style and ethic with his
residents. I believe that this has not only been beneficial to his
learning community, but our entire residence hall. To start off with,
Nick has made strides to bring diversity to his hall by bringing a
speaker in to present "T-Time with Aiden," a program about transgenders.
He had also started a bulletin board contest, where he accepted layouts
of different boards to put up with a key theme of diversity. Here, he
has put the objective of diversity in his residents' hands to shape it
themselves. The designs have been put in and later on in April, they
will be voted on and constructed. A need to appreciate diversity on the
college campus is becoming more necessary, and Nick has taken a role in
spreading this appreciation throughout the learning community. Finally,
Nick has partaken in many Charleston Chews, whether they be his own or
his resident's. Nick has supported his residents academically, hoping
that they gain something from eating dinner with the faculty who have
come. Additionally, many residents who hardly even participate in hall
activities have been participating in "Academic Bingo," an academic
initiative put on by the hall directors. Although no one person
completed a blackout for the program, a lot of residents still
participated and even got some lines--a success. Recently within Hall
Council, a proposition to write a by-law concerning the method of voting
on expenditure requests had been put forth with much debate among the
other resident assistants, Nick being one of the few with an opinion.
When the directors had explained it further and asked for resident
assistants to take time for the by-law committee, Nick was one of the
only freely willing to sacrifice however much time in order to get a
resident assistant's point of view added into it. The by-law was
eventually implemented and was accepted without any dilemma. Nick had
also been asked to sacrifice a few hours of his days in order to
interview potential assistant resident directors for this next year. No
matter what the request, Nick is able to successfully put aside some
time to help those in need--he always has. To sum up his accomplishments
this month, I also believe it is noteworthy to mention his involvement
with PRIDE this month as they have been working on and wrapping up the
Sex Positive Fair which will take place later in April. Nick has put
hard work into working with his residents to have the best residence
hall experience this month. He doesn't just want his residents to have
fun in a social environment, but also to be challenged through many
different other factors, too. His work has been exemplary and worthy of
praise as he is able to juggle so much and efficiently live contently.
He truly is living according to his nature. Word Count: 529
