“Everyone in society should be a role model, not only for their own
self-respect, but for respect from others.” - Barry Bonds
Major League Baseball brought Mr. Bonds to a strong understanding of the
importance of being a solid support and model for those around. The
pressure of having numerous others look up to and aspire to be like
someone else can be overwhelming. It takes a true leader and motivated
individual to be able to really call themselves a role model for others.
Through the month of March, I am confident Ms. Brigitte Mason has proven
herself to be extremely deserving of this label; Role Model.
As a Resident Assistant in Steagall Hall, Ms. Brigitte Mason has
exemplified leadership throughout March far past those of her peers and
has positioned herself on staff as an individual who is willing to do
anything necessary to help out and enhance the goals of others. In the
first days of the month, Brigitte worked to support her coworkers and
even supervisor while their Hall Director was away at a conference.
Brigitte was looked to for leadership, answering questions of others,
and was sure to be extremely supportive when her supervisor returned;
coming in the next day to simply say “hello” and see if there was
anything she could do to assist.
Often as a Resident Assistant, new programs and initiatives are placed
in front of staff members with little notice or details beforehand. This
month, when a program focusing on informing residents about study aboard
opportunities came up, involving faculty and staff who care about the
topic, Brigitte stepped up and took the lead on the program. While the
question of who would be willing to assist with the program was posed to
all staff members, Brigitte willingly volunteered without hesitation.
Her peers, just as busy as herself, did not simply see a staff member
say “yes” to assist a program, they say an individual modeling what it
takes to be a driven, caring, and motivated staff member who is willing
to go above and beyond. Brigitte went on to create numerous large
posters for the program, looking like maps of the world. She also
created globe page flyers for each community in West Campus. Showing her
dedication further, when the program arrived on March 28th, Brigitte
donated time eating with the faculty and staff in the dining center to
make them feel welcome, as well as took part in the program, answering
questions about her experiences abroad.
Brigitte also learned a valuable lesson on how role models work to
recognize the hard work of others this month as well. In February,
Brigitte submitted her first “Of the Month” nomination for one of her
residents. However, it was her actions during the month of March which
warrant the recognition you are reading at this moment. After submitting
her nomination for someone else, Brigitte sought out others to inform
about the program, telling other staff members and residents about the
fantastic “Of the Month” nomination process. Few leaders, and fewer role
models, understand the importance of taking time to support and
recognize others. Brigitte propelled her “Role Model” status this month
by simply being exited to inform of others of the program.
While this nomination has only been able to shed light on three
outstanding examples of Brigitte’s dedication this month, rest assured
the list could continue. Brigitte accomplished all of these on top of
her usual outstanding performance as a Resident Assistant. Being a model
for her peers all month, Brigitte has truly shown great respect for all
those around her.
