Sometimes the greatest, most genuine, and absolutely outstanding
people are the ones you do not always notice right when you enter a
room. They are the ones that stand out not in show but in their
actions; their good deeds are a result of integrity and because they
simply like doing them. Resident Assistant Ashton Lewis is one of
these people. He is in no way soft spoken, but the small actions of
his daily life comprise a much greater person than the first
impression. A first impression of Ashton looking at March alone would show Ashton
putting on three different programs including a game night, a debate
over ancient civilizations, and a wing-wide game of assassins that has
and will span the course of several weeks. He has held several wing
meetings, handed out surveys, and kept in constant contact with his
residents so that his residents can get the most out of college.
Ashton could be seen in the Lobby, dining with residents,
participating in study groups, or hanging out at the desk. He has
taken charge of the intramural softball team at Honors Hall,
encouraging new people to join and motivating individuals to come out
to the games. However, past the first impressions lies an even greater person. One
of his residents, Suzanne Peterson, stated that Ashton is “kind and
able to laugh at himself, he makes other people feel comfortable.”
The assassins program was not Ashton’s idea. It was his resident’s,
but Ashton listened to her and supported her desire to have this
program. He then helped her get it started, letting her take hold of
the reins. One of the traits that make Ashton an extraordinary person
is that he not only motivates people, he empowers them. He not only
does great deeds, he convinces others they can as well.
Ashton is also always inviting residents to eat lunch on Fridays. His
residents want to go; they enjoy hanging out with the community that
Ashton has inspired by his constant nourishment of it. His residents
view him as a friend, a resource, a confidant, and not simply an
authority figure. However, Ashton remains respected as a leader. In
the words of Albus Dumbledore, “It takes great courage to stand up to
your enemies, but it takes even more courage to stand up to your
friends.” Ashton has drawn the line with his own friends on several
occasions in March when actions needed to stop before bad consequences
resulted. Daniel Matthews, another resident of Honors Hall, discussed that
Ashton, though not Daniel’s RA, still studies with him for their
physics class. Ashton also holds many study groups in several
different locations within Honors Hall. He encourages students to
study and make good grades, but also to have fun in the process. He
does not simply add to the great community at Honors Hall he creates
it with his attitude, actions, and personality. Ashton’s circle of
influence does not only span the radius of his wing. He has an impact
on the entire hall, Honors College, and any other organizations he is
involved with. As a member of the staff, Ashton constantly inquires about the days
of the other RAs, desk clerks, Custodians, and Hall Director. He
genuinely wishes to know how they are doing and listens
wholeheartedly. He brings the staff together by inviting them places,
incorporating everyone into the conversation, and by suggesting
programs they can all put on together. He is always willing to put in
time and effort into everything he does, and he goes above and beyond
expectancies and first impressions.
