March is a trying time for most students. March is a time where students
are trying to balance their midterms with their excitement at the
prospects of Spring Break. Every so often you meet a particularly
phenomenal student as a Resident Assistant who manages to achieve and
overcome that stress to do more and to succeed at more. I am nominating
Marian Schwarz as the First Year Student of the Month for March because
of the sheer dedication she has demonstrated to making an impact on
others, to do more, throughout the month of March. During the month of March, Marian has set the bar for a model first year
student and leader. In Gordon Hall she continues to be an ever-present
positive force in her community. She always maintains a happy and
positive attitude all while always willing to go out of her way to help
others and tries to ensure they feel included. She is quite simply the
“Tiger the Tiger” of her hall as she is always cheerful, outgoing, and
“bouncy” in her disposition. Marian’s door is almost always open and she
encourages her residents on her floor to get out of their comfort zones
and try new things as well as to give back to the community through
service. This has been even more prevalent this March. In addition the exceptional amiable atmosphere Marian has created in her
hall this March, Marian has truly done a stunning job at community
service going as far as to give up her Spring Break. Marian is the only
freshman on the executive board of the on campus service organization
Raider’s Helping Others (RHO). As an executive board member, Marian was
the trip leader for the group’s Spring Break service trip to Joplin
Missouri and has spent an extraordinary amount of time preparing for the
trip this month as well as doing any final fundraising. While on the
trip Marian showed outstanding leadership skills as well as bringing a
bit of her “bouncy” disposition to those around her that she helped. Not only outside the classroom has Marian shown to be an outstanding
freshman resident in the month of March, but inside as well. Marian
balances her time extraordinarily well with the challenging major of
Environmental Engineering. Not only did Marian maintain a standard of
academic excellence while balancing her extracurricular and social life,
but she consistently encourages the forming study groups for her hall
and consistently strives to achieve and help others do the same. March has shown to be an incredible month for Marian. In just one month
Marian has helped to set a standard for Gordon Hall and set the
framework for others to do the same. She does all of this positive
“bouncing” without thinking anything of herself or recognition like no
one student I have seen before. Marian truly and dearly loves helping
others and getting them involved. Marian is beyond a doubt deserving
recognition as First year Student of the month of March.
