Loyola University Chicago Emergency Medical Service (LUCEMS) serves as
an integral role in the Loyola community for their quick responding,
pre-hospital care and education program and continuous service. The
LUCEMS program has two parts for pre-medical and non pre-medical
students: educational and responder. In the education program students
are trained in CPR/AED and First Aid procedures through "street
medicine" scenarios and classroom-style learning and can earn CPR and
EMT-B Certification. The responder program allows students to gain
hands-on experience in clinical procedures and emergency medicine
which operates nightly on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends. The most
impressive aspect of this organization is that was created by students
and, with the exception of Campus Safety Supervision and Medical
Direction from the Loyola Medical Center, it is entire run,
voluntarily by students. The student-run Executive Board takes care of
daily operations and strives to foster the longevity of the program
and student-volunteers teach the classroom courses and act as first
responders to on-campus emergencies. During the month of March, I witnessed first-hand the hard work and
care of LUCEMS Responders. The annual Powder-Puff Football Tournament
between the sororities on-campus has a fierce competition. Members of
each sorority try to battle their way to victory and as a result,
injuries occur. At each of the games attended, LUCEMS responders
sprang into action when a player needed it, but it wasn't until one of
my sisters was severely injured that I noticed and appreciated their
care and attention. One of my sisters was kneed in the head, and when
she struggled to walk off the field, LUCEMS ran to her aid. My sister
was coughing blood, could not focus or sit straight and her condition
scared other sisters. The Medics controlled the bleeding, checked for
loose teeth and checked for serious head or neck injuries. They called
for an ambulance and stood by my sister’s side until all medical
personnel made sure she was okay. It turns out my sister split her lip
and suffered a concussion. She, in addition to the entire sisterhood,
is extremely grateful and appreciative for LUCEMS care, attention and
dedication to the health and safety of my sister. The most exemplary quality of this organization is their care,
attention and dedication to all students they care for, without regard
to when they are called. This student-led team’s attention to fellow
student’s well being not only personifies what it means to be good
people, but people for others following the Loyola Student Promise.
The Student Promise of caring for ourselves, others and our community
for others and for the greater glory of our God. It is for this care,
attention, and educational mission that this student-led organization
is most deserving for Organization of the Month.
