Please explain the outstanding contributions of the nominee during the month of nomination

Yvette Andablo is an awe inspiring person who goes above and beyond in everything she does. In the month of March she continued with that mentality and deserves recognition for the amazing things she did. Yvette works as the special assistant, or SA, for sustainability at the University of North Texas. Her work entails heading up the sustainability issues for UNT housing, raising awareness of recycling and other sustainability issues, and recruiting and supervising a team of sustainability advocates called eco reps.

In the month of March Yvette did many things that demonstrated not only her great work ethic, but her passion for helping others. In March, RHA did a softball-tailgating event and we were really stressed out trying to staff. Yvette stepped up to the plate and offered to help us with the event. She devoted 6 hours of her day to helping us set up, serve the food, and clean up. Yvette’s smiling face and upbeat attitude motivated us to work harder and put on a successful event.

When other people were partying and relaxing over spring break, Yvette went to Galveston on a school sponsored alternative spring break trip and performed one week of sustainability geared community service. I also went on the alternative spring break trip and I got to see the passion and dedication Yvette had for sustainability and the environment. On one of the days we were lifting 80 pound concrete bags and arranging them to make a break wall. Yvette worked tirelessly to assist in placing the concrete bricks, but also in planting marsh grass to help support the local environment.

During March there was a nationwide competition between schools called Recyclemania and Yvette was in charge of housings participation. She worked hard to entice the residence halls into participating in the event by creating a competition between the halls to see which one recycled the most. Yvette and her eco reps tabled and made announcements in the residence halls to raise awareness of Recyclemania. As an extra incentive, for the winning hall, Yvette has promised to host an ice cream party for hall that recycles the most.

TRIORG or NRHH, RLAC, and RHA, host a huge annual festival called ResFest. Yvette volunteered her service and that of her eco reps to assist in making ResFest a success. She took in on the responsibility of disposing of all trash and recyclables, as well as staffing a table to promote being sustainable while living on campus. Her assistance with the event that had well over 500 people attend was invaluable and her support aided in the event running smoothly.

On March 31st the University of North Texas hosted The Big Event, which is a day of community service that directly benefits UNT’s surrounding community. Yvette not only participated in The Big Event, she was a coordinator and helped inspire and direct others in performing community service. Her group thoroughly cleaned a long stretch of a major road that runs next to UNT. I drove on the road after the event and was amazed at the pristine condition it was in.

Yvette has not only exceeded in her position for the month of March but has gone above and beyond to help other organizations under Housing exceed as well. While many people were celebrating their last spring break as seniors, Yvette focused so much time and energy toward providing service in many different aspects while preparing for grad- school exams and graduation. Her great volunteer work and fantastic personal drive inspires others to make UNT the best and most sustainable place to live in the world.
