As Colin Powell once said that relates to accomplishing a task, “A dream doesn’t become a
reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” Powell’s words perfectly relate to one of the executive board members from the residence hall
association, who has worked countless hours of organizing, recognizing and reaching out to
many students and staff across campus during the month of April. That executive board
member is the director of recognition Carlos Aponte, who got himself back up on his feet each
and every day this month. Throughout most of the duration of the spring semester, Carlos had the responsibility of
organizing and hosting the RHA end of year celebration for all the student leaders. However,
the month of April was crunch time for that obligation, and on top of keeping up with his
academic priorities, Carlos did not waste a single second making sure that the end of year
celebration was an unforgettable success. Prior to the celebration at the beginning of April, Carlos stayed on his toes making sure that all
of the general body members from the residence hall association nominated, and voted for
awards on which their fellow student leaders would receive during the ceremony. While Carlos
ended up having to extend the deadline twice, he still remained on the lookout for nominations
and votes for all the residents that deserved to be recognized by their peers. Carlos also played
a huge role in helping the other RHA executive board members, weeks before the celebration,
decide on other awards that would be given out to the general body members that deserved to
be recognized at the event. On April 2nd, Carlos brought excitement and anticipation to the end of year event by creating
and sending out e-vites for all the RHA, NRHH, Weekend Warriors and Residence Life
professional staff members. Carlos also made great efforts to be sure all who was invited knew
about the celebration and that everyone who came looked forward to a fantastic and magical
evening of recognition.
On April 9th, it was the night of executive board elections and Carlos was bidding for next
year’s RHA director of recognition. After being nominated by the general body, Carlos put on an
outstanding presentation showing he was willing to improve on what he does within his
position next year, and also wanted to be sure he recognizes more people not just within the
residence hall association, but all over campus as well. As the general body proudly praises his
efforts, Carlos was officially re-elected RHA director of recognition for the 2012-2013 school
year. On April 23rd, it was time for the end of the year celebration as Carlos made final efforts to be
sure everything was ready. As 7:00p.m. struck, Carlos opened the ceremony and presented
awards with as much proudness as the great executive board member he is. After the
celebration, many people praised Carlos for all his hard work, dedication and power to his
position and duties as recognition director for RHA. At the end of the month, Carlos has accomplished many great things for himself as well as the
entire RHA organization. Carlos made sure recognition was shared; he made sure he got the
word out to the community; he proved his hard work to the entire organization as well as
himself. And lastly, he made sure everyone had a great time at the ceremony as well as
everyone who deserved recognition, received it! That is why Carlos Aponte deserves some recognition of his own by being named the April
2012 executive board member of the month.
