Andy Thompson consistently provides our staff with the encouragement
and support necessary to make Marlatt Hall one of the best places to
live on campus. His positivity and excitement energize the students
and staff that interact every day. However, in the month of April,
Andy excelled professionally in an outstanding way. Andy served as the Co-Coordinator for Graduate Hiring and the RSVP
Committee. These programs and their evaluations concluded this month
with great success. Hundreds of students reserved their space in the
residence halls and most of them completed their housing contracts for
the coming year. Andy took a risk by reorganizing the structure of the
process with the timing and days events were taking place. RSVP even
added a day for students interested in Jardine to tour the available
apartments and know the exact unit they would be residing in the
following year. His vision and willingness to challenge students made
the program a huge success. What I found more impressive was his
willingness to re-evaluate throughout the process and meet growing
concerns. The advertisements were revamped, and caused some confusion.
Andy rallied the troops in Marlatt Hall to advertise the program and
staffed tables to educate residents about the changing dates. I
personally saw him reach out to a student on my floor who hadn't
reserved his room that he had stayed in for the past few years. This
resident struggles with change, and it arguably altered the course of
his success the following year by helping me remind him. Andy also worked on the Grad Hiring Committee, and devoted an unreal
amount of time to making the candidates feel comfortable. His
communication was always clear and gave participants early notice of
when they would be helping with interviews. As a participant in the
process for two years, I can definitely say that his work on this
project left me feeling far more comfortable for the interview
process. The committee even added a training session for those doing
the interviewing to ease student anxiety about the process and ensure
uniformity of interviewee's experiences. Through both of these
professional endeavors, Andy remained in communication with the staff.
I knew that, even though he wasn't in the office all the time, he
would be available in any time of need. Finally, Andy was also responsible for Assistant Director of Residence
Life Nick Lander's position while Nick went on professional leave.
Andy took on an incredibly amount of responsiblity, attending
contracting hearings and meeting with students. Performing both of
these jobs at one time is no small undertaking, and Andy should be
recognized for his willingness to assist the department in a time of
need. Andy is one of the only people at K-State who consistently challenges
me as a leader, student, and person. While at times we joke about my
shortcomings, I know that at the end of the he wants to help me
develop through them. This month was the most stressful of my entire
collegiate career to date. I wrecked my car, struggled in my personal
life, and bit of a tad more than I could chew. Through all of that, my
support system in Marlatt Hall, and especially Andy, coached and
supported me through it. Without him, and the rest of the Marlatt
Staff, I don't know how I would have succeeded through it all. Andy is
an exceptional role model of acceptance of others and an appreciation
for the everyday joys of life. He deserves this OTM and the
recognition associated with it, more than anyone I can think of for
the month of April. Word Count: 599
