Have you found your wings? Alicia Jade Geurin from Texas Tech has found hers. As the president of Wall-Gates Complex Council, Alicia Jade has soared to new heights this month with all of her ducks in a row. Alicia Jade is deserving of Executive Board Member of the Month for four reasons: Outstanding Leadership, Sustainable Service, Meaningful Recognition, and Commitment to Holistic Learning.

Outstanding Leadership:

The month of April marks the end of the year for many complex councils at Texas Tech as finals begin in May. Many of us are burnt-out or stressed-out this time of year and are ready for summer. Burn-out is not a term that can be used to describe the Wall-Gates Complex Council, though. While they might be ready for summer, they have not checked out for the year yet. They are busy planning an “End Of Year Study Session Spectacular, Part 2,” a continuation of their award winning Complex Council Program of the Year that took place last semester.

For the last Complex Council meeting of the year, Alicia Jade wanted to do something special to recognize the members and residents of Wall/Gates and to get them ready for next year. The tagline and description for the meeting was, “Dress like a superhero. Believe you can fly. We’ll give you wings. We encourage residents to dress up like their favorite super hero to represent the inner strength they will need to carry them strong through finals! We shall invite them to share in boneless wings and encourage repeat 2012-2013 residents to run for Complex Council Executive positions so they may prepare campaign material over the summer!”

Sustainable Service:

Alicia wanted to prepare next year’s executive board to the best of her abilities even though elections are still months away, and she will be a community advisor in another hall. In preparation for this transition, she has had each executive board member right letters to their future selves for next year addressing things they wish they would have known, ideas they have, how they interacted with other positions, and anything else they wanted to include. In addition to the letters, they collected e-mails, project proposals, and other relevant information to assist with the success of next year’s Wall/Gates Complex Council. She wanted to start the first transition package that every other complex council can pass on and build upon.

Meaningful Recognition:

At our last superhero themed meeting, Alicia Jade created paper plate awards for everyone on the executive board team. However, they were more than paper plate awards: they were badges of honor demonstrating the dedication and bonds they had built this semester as a team. The plates were attached to leis so they could be worn! It was like being awarded a medal from the Mayor of Gothman City for saving the city from another near close call.

Commitment to Holistic Learning:

Alicia Jade has fostered every aspect of holistic learning as President of Complex Council and as a part of the Texas Tech Community. She has assisted in the development of each and every member of Complex Council to help find their identity, meaning, and purpose in life. Her programming ideas assist establishing connections to the community (bringing in local vendors and campus organizations for programs), natural world (leave everyplace cleaner than when you arrived), and to humanitarian values (fundraising for the Red Cross).

Our President has taught all of us how to fly high this month. Alicia Jade Geurin’s exemplification of and dedication to outstanding leadership, sustainable service, meaningful recognition, and commitment to holistic learning inspire everyone to find their wings.
