In these final weeks of being a Resident Advisor (RA) at University
Village, an apartment-style residence hall at Chico State, I have
inevitably had time to reflect on all the time I have spent with
University Housing and Food Service. Like any job, there have been ups
and downs, good days and bad days, good coworkers and not-so-good
coworkers. It is this last point I will be focusing on most. A good
coworker, or as we call them “teammate”, will go out of their way to
ensure the best of any situation. Furthermore, and this is perhaps the
most pertinent in my mind, a good teammate will always strive to demand
the best out of those around them. In much the same manner, I would
consider a good friend to act likewise. In this particular case, the
terms “friend” and “teammate” coincide when I think of my supervisor,
Assistant Residence Community Coordinator (ARCC), Pablo Soto.
Pablo has always pushed the RA’s of University Village to work to their
greatest ability and complete their tasks in a timely manner to the
degree that he knows we can achieve. He monitors our progress well, in
addition to maintaining his own duties. Most significantly, I would like
to recognize Pablo Soto for his contribution to an annual event we hold
within University Housing and Food Service called, “Cirque De UV.” In
the past, the duties of organizing the event in question were typically
spread out to all of the underlying RA’s with the ARCC taking the brunt
of the work. In this particular case, Pablo not only took the most work,
but nearly all of it. In addition to the number of duties that he is
tasked with for his position of ARCC, Pablo took it solely upon himself
to organize Cirque De UV this year. For means of comparison, I will
consider the past Cirque De UV. The event in question took a team of
twelve RA’s a matter of months to organize, much of which was spent
contacting businesses for booths, organizing on-campus resources, etc.
This year, Pablo did the work of twelve people in the same amount, if
not less, time. Never once did he complain, despite balancing a
professional and social life on top of this daunting responsibility.
To me, this legitimately embodies the whole of Pablo Soto’s personality.
He is an individual who silently completes tasks, taking care to handle
them in a professional manner. Though he does not flaunt these
achievements, I do believe that it is important to receive recognition
for the contributions to the University Housing and Food Service staff,
and more importantly, the vital role he plays in the success of the
University Village community team. It has been both an honor and a
pleasure working with him, and it is an experience that I will not soon
forget. It is for that reason, among countless others, that I nominate
Pablo Soto for recognition as April’s Residence Life Staff/Faculty of
the month.
