The National Residence Hall Honorary at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise is
deserving of an OTM for the month of May. During the month of May, NRHH at UVa-Wise has
organized events that benefitted the community within the College, as well as outside of it. The
UVa-Wise NRHH also established connections between the new executive board and the new
executive board. The first event in May that NRHH held was the selling of ice cream sandwiches, popsicles,
and other frozen treats. This idea was thought of when NRHH members began to notice the
sudden heat waves that would come across the campus. With this, students often looked
drained and unwilling to go to class. One of the purposes of the ice cream sale was to help
motivate the students to come out and enjoy the weather, and be able to go to class. This event
was also held to provide a way to relieve some stress that students felt during finals week. It
also benefitted the students living on and off campus by bringing one of the joys that people
enjoyed during their childhood. Riding around in a golf cart with ice cream truck music playing
made many laugh, lifting up their spirits during finals week. Whether it was to give them
encouragement as they went off to study, or provide a break in between studying, everyone
enjoyed the ice cream. The next event the NRHH at UVa-Wise did in May was paint flower pots for the local
community hospital. This idea was generated through our VP of Selection and Induction, who
was the community service chair. She thought that it would be nice to bring back some joy into
the world’s of those who were sick in the hospital. All members of NRHH agreed to this idea
and all painted at least one flower pot. This event not only strengthened the spirits of those
that were in the hospital, it also provided a bonding experience between the newly inducted
members, the new executive board, and the old executive board. Another thing that the NRHH at UVa-Wise did during the month of May that shows they
are deserving of the May OTM was a reflective recognition event for the member of the
honorary. One of the newly inducted members, as well as the new VP of Selection and
Induction: Maegan Smith decided that NRHH should do superlatives for the all of the members.
NRHH believed that this was a good idea, because those that recognize outstanding students,
organizations, faculty, and events deserve some recognition of their own. She went as far as to
provide one for the UVa-Wise NRHH Advisor. This sparked something within all of the NRHH
members and it started NRHH to plan for the next year, based upon the superlatives that the
new executive board members handed out. Each person would be designated to a certain task
that would allow them to further the goals and objectives UVa-Wise NRHH had, such as
organizing fundraisers, planning more community service, and recognizing outstanding
services to the school community. With all the above, NRHH deserves to be recognized for their dedication to providing a
better community, encouraging students during finals week, building a stronger NRHH, and
making and maintaining connections between the old and new members.
