The Missouri Hall Senate is an organization that was inactive during
the 2006-2007 school year due to renovation being made on the
residence hall. Because of this, most of the members of the old
Missouri Hall Senate have graduated or moved off campus resulting in
an almost completely new body of individuals to fulfill the job of
Missouri Hall’s Senate. During the month of October, this organization
has made huge strides in learning the roles that they can fulfill as a
hall senate and leadership qualities that they may not have known they
had. They started forming the foundation for what looks to be a
promising year.
At the beginning of the semester, the hall senate came up with ideas
of what they wanted the senate to be and what direction they wanted to
take it and made a list of specific events and contributions they
wanted to make to Missouri Hall. One such event that they wanted to
reinstate is the House Wars, a competition between the different
houses in the hall. The first competition that took place was an
extension of a campus wide Halloween haunted house competition, that
involves house in all of the residence halls on campus. The Missouri
Halls Senate gave each house in Missouri Hall $15 to put toward
decorations for their house and offered a prize and points for the
House Wars competition to the best haunted house in Missouri Hall. By
encouraging houses to participate in the event and giving them a means
to get started, more houses took part and the result were many fun and
creative decorations throughout the hall.
Another huge step that the senate took was passing a resolution in
support of a Bike Co-op on campus. This Bike Co-op would provide a
place for students and members of the Kirksville community to rent
bikes and have access to many services such as bike repair, bike
tagging, and bike maintenance. This would also provide an opportunity
for more jobs on campus and encourage the use of bicycles as a way of
traveling. This resolution was debated and passed, and sent to the
Residence Hall Association, the Student Senate, and the administration
that would allot funds and placement of the Bike Co-op. Using the funds left over from the previous years the senate debated
on many uses to help the newly remodeled building. They have looked at
the needs of the students that live in Missouri Hall and purchased new
pots, pans, and cooking utensils, and pool cues. Along with the things
that the senate itself purchased, they also voted to put forth half of
the money, along with Residence Life, for a new ping pong table to go
on the main floor of the hall, a contribution that many students had
been asking about. Missouri Hall senate also paid for a third of the
expenses for two of its members to attend a regional conference to
expand the members’ knowledge of programming ideas and resources that
could help with future programming for the hall. Overall, the month of October was very productive for the Missouri
Hall senate and along with the things they have already accomplished,
there are sure to be many great months to come.
