Hall Director Bill McKenney has done an excellent job during the month
of January integrating his new staff members. Of the Centennial Hall
staff of 19, five Student Advisors left at semester for reasons such
as graduation, and opportunities abroad or internships. In return,
Bill’s residence hall gained five new staff members for the Spring
2008 semester, from one returning Student Advisor to four mid-year
hires. Bill McKenney has done an excellent job of making sure these
new Student Advisors have become acclimated to the largest residence
hall on campus by offering staff bonding opportunities such as bowling
or dinner and keeping regular office hours to show his dedication to
being available for the residents of his building and his staff. Bill
has shown dedication to both his job and a desire to further his
education by taking a class this semester that deals with psychology
and higher education, both of which are important topics that relate
to his future goal of getting a Master’s Degree in Student Affairs. In the end of January, Bill attended a College Student Personnel
Association conference to help him gain knowledge of his future goals
in higher education. While this conference was a benefit to Bill
because it showed him the many possibilities in higher education for
his future, Bill was a benefit to this conference as well by being a
representative of the Residence Life department at Truman State
University and by being able to share his experiences as a new Hall
Director and as a professional who just graduated from college.
Attending the various sessions at the conference was beneficial to
Bill to help further his career in Student Affairs and it was also
beneficial to the Residence Life department at Truman State because
Bill was able to bring back information from these sessions to help
further develop his staff and to help further develop the department
as a whole. From integrating his new staff to furthering his
education, Bill has had an excellent start to 2008!
