Edward (EJ) has quickly become an experienced and reliable member of
the WPI community within the first few weeks of the school year, a
feat that is usually accomplished senior year or not at all. He
carries himself with a confident attitude that has resulted in his
fellow residents looking to him for help sometimes before their RAs.
He deserves to be recognized for his attitude, willingness to
participate, and ability to take it all in stride along with WPI's
fast paced classes and the entirely new college world he has entered. He could be found at all of his residence hall's programs to date,
including ones for other parts of his building besides his own. He
took time out of his schedule early in the year to go around the
building and personally introduce himself to all of his complex's RAs
to offer his help at their programs as well as to simply develop a
healthy relationship with them. This is not the only way he has involved himself in his hall by far.
Although he was too busy to officially run for a position in his Hall
Council, he initiated a campaign only days before voting took place to
make himself a write-in for President. Despite several other
canditates that had been in the running up to a week in advance, EJ's
enthusiasm and motivation swayed a majority of the building's voters,
easily making him the new President. He once again took initiative in this new leardership role by taking
his executive board around the complex to allow them to meet the RAs
that he had previously befriended, realizing that they are a valuable
resource for his Hall Council. After only one after of a leadership
retreat, he was ready to run his first Hall Council meeting. He took
control as if he had been in that postition for years. He already had
prepared an extensive agenda, rivaling the initiatives of the campus-
wide Residence Hall Council President's agenda. On top of that, he
succeeded in implementing every one of these goals. He did a lot of
work to run his first program only three days after his very first
meeting, where the Hall Council members where still meeting each
other. There were several initiatives that he wished to pursue, but
was not backed by the campus-wide RHC, but that did not stop EJ. He
rallied support once again from his building to plan unofficial
programs, which were very well-attended. Every week, EJ draws new members to meetings that I have never even
seen around the hall; he proves that a little motivation and the right
programs can get even the most reclusive WPI students involved with
their Hall Councils. His hall also led the campus in fundraising,
outselling the other halls by at least a hundred dollars, which EJ
plans to use for larger programs in the future. Somehow EJ finds time to be involved in other areas of campus as well.
I was surprised to find EJ at the very first newspaper meeting in
early September. The bulk of the work for the newspaper comes on the
weekends when the entire paper is compiled. This is usually of very
small interest, but EJ changed this quickly. Not only did he attend
the very first weekend's layout session, he stayed very late into the
night to learn the software necessary to allow him to contribute on a
weekly basis, which he continues to do. These activities make him a very well-rounded and quickly respected
resident, definitely worthy of recognition for his attitude and
efforts as a first-year student. Word Count: 600
