If there is one foundational commonality among the residents in the
Residence Halls, it is the utilization of Spike’s. Spike’s has a prime
location, great hours, and quick service. While these attributes
contribute to the popularity of Spike’s as a dining experience, I feel
there is another factor that is often overlooked. The “X-Factor” that I
speak of is none other than Mr. Keith Griffin. Keith started working at
Spike’s this semester and really hit the ground running. I still
remember the first time I met Keith. I ordered a “steak & cheese” wrap
simply expecting him to quietly fill my order. Much to my surprise,
Keith responded by saying how phenomenal he thought the wrap was and
listed the toppings and recommended ranch dressing for the sauce. I
told him the toppings were right on, but I much preferred BBQ sauce.
Keith answered with a jolly voice saying, “Sure Boss! I’ll have to try
it with BBQ sauce next time!” Even though it is now November, Keith and
I still have fun converstaion evertime I order an item. While this
story might seem a bit trivial, I feel it demonstrates Keith’s love for
the residence of Drake and his passion for serving others. Keith always
has a smile on his face and never turns down a friendly conversation.
After the first few weeks of Keith’s arrival, word quickly spread about
this genuine and welcoming Spike’s worker. I have asked some of the
residents on my floor what they think of Keith. The cumulative response
was overwhelmingly positive. One resident, Valerie Uthoff, gave a great
example of Keith’s passion. She was buying chips and salsa from the
C-Store because a group of residents were having a get-together. She
invited Keith to come join the party in Crawford. Keith responded
kindly by saying that he could not because he had to work. Valerie said
she was sorry and wished he could make it. Then, with a smile, Keith
said, “Oh its no problem, it’s always a party here in Spike’s!” When
Keith is around, Spike’s truly is a party. I feel the entire campus has
in someway or another felt the warmth and kindness that Keith so
willingly emanates. I told Keith I was planning on nominating him for
this award. His answer sums up his reasons for taking the job at
Spike’s. He said, “Being here with the residents helps keep me on my
toes. I love the energy they have and I just want to keep that
atmosphere going.” Keith Griffin has gone above and beyond the basic
requirements of making sandwiches and pizzas for residents that at times
can be ungrateful. If Keith sees someone with a frown, he makes it his
goal to turn it upside down. Mr. Griffin deserves to be recognized for
the “Spotlight” OTM so we all can show him our appreciation for a job
well done. Word Count: 453
