During the month of September, Jessica deRenzy has been an amazing
Resident Assistant. Jessica is an RA for Woodruff Hall, a suite style
community with freshmen and upper-class students. Jessica has gone
above and beyond during Septemberon her floor and it shows. Jessica has
been outstanding when it has come to RHA, Programming, and community
development on her floor this month.
Jessica has excelled in programming this month. She started the month
off by taking some of her floor to T-Night. T-Night is a night
dedicated to GA Tech traditions and teaches students what the traditions
are and why we have them. Jessica noticed that she wanted more
interaction on her floor so the second big program she came up with was
Floor Bingo. Jessica made a bingo board with little known facts about
residents that she learned from conversations with them and the
residents had to go around and talk to each other and figure out who
matched each clue. Jessica gave the boards to her floor on Tuesday and
everyone who completed the bingo board and turned it in got a king size
candy bar for participating. About 45 or her 60 residents participated
in the event. Through this program, Jessica’s resident really started to
bond as a floor. The third big program Jessica did during September was
a Capture the Flag game against another floor. On the day of the
program it was raining and had rained all week. Jessica decided that it
was not safe to have the program but did not want to cancel the event
because many residents were looking forward to it. So Jessica contacted
the Campus Recreation Center and reserved 2 Racquetball courts and
taught the residents how to play Wallyball. The residents loved the
event and want to play Wallyball again in the future as a floor. Jessica
also wanted to promote academics during the month, since test and
midterms were fast approaching so she created a chart with common core
classes and other classes for the majors on her floor that the residents
could write their name and find study buddies on the floor for test.
This also allowed Jessica to see which classes her residents were taking
so she could create study nights in the future around test days.
Jessica deRenzy has created a great community on her floor. If you walk
on her floor, the residents have their suite doors open and are walking
between suites talking to each other. When you see Jessica on the floor,
she is often in the lounges or talking to her residents. I often see
Jessica in the dining hall on campus, and Jessica usually has some of
her residents with her eating. Jessica is always trying to get to know
her residents better and getting them to come to programs. Jessica and I
often have conversations about which residents she doesn’t know as well
and she always has plans on how she is going to get to know them.
Jessica has also been selected to serve as Staff Representative for RHA
because of her work with RHA to improve conditions and communications
between RHA and RAs. In this role she has served as a mentor to other
RA’s when writing and submitting bills to RHA. She helps them through
the process so their bills will be approved and they get money for their
programs. Jessica is an amazing RA. Jessica has been a great staff
member that has gone above and beyond in the month of September, and
truly deserves to be RA of the Month.
