Being a first year RA can be challenging. It is tough to adjust to
being a part of a staff,
balancing academics, planning programs and managing crises. Julia
Black, Boyd Hall RA, has
completed all of these tasks with grace over the month of September. When it comes to being a part of a staff, Julia is an extraordinary
team player. She has
stepped up to take 'duty' when other staff have asked her to do so. In
addition, she has been
an active part of staff socials. She attended the 'non-mandatory'
staff dinner on September
13th. When an fellow RA was not feeling well, and was sick in the
women's bathroom of the
library, Julia was notified and came to her rescue immediately on
September 17th. Julia
helped her fellow RA get back to Boyd Hall immediately, and called for
additional assistance.
She puts other people first, and that has really shown through during
the month of
September. In addition, she was one of the few that attended a staff
cookie social event on
September 26th. Finally, she wanted the staff to get together, so she
orchestrated a 'trip to
Starbucks' event after the staff meeting on September 29th. Over 1/3
of the staff went with
her in an effort to socialize and take a break from studying. Julia has been extraordinary at building community during September.
On September 8, she
had a "One Resourceful Cookie" program to educate her residents on
academic resources
across campus. She held a sweatpants forum for her residents, in order
to decide what floor
gear they wanted. She has had several spontaneous programs that have
stretched from sand
volleyball at the rec to watching a movie in her room. Not only has
she built a strong
community on her floor, but she planned two complex-wide programs over
the course of the
month. "Nacho Mama's Mixer" was a program designed to educate women on
the dangers of
alcohol and sexual assault. As an educational program, Julia
orchestrated the publicity,
music, and snacks for the event. She went above and beyond in helping
the program be
successful. Over 50 women showed up, and they all walked away being
able to make more
educated decisions. In addition, Julia orchestrated a "Staff Hunt"
program, which occurred on
September 29th. Part of the advertising was t-shirts for the staff to
wear on the day of the
event. Julia spent all day on September 26th getting the items ready
for the t-shirts and
making them. She was instrumental in its success, and over 30
residents attended the
program. In addition to the programs, she has orchestrated study
groups with residents in
Putnam and Boyd hall, in an effort to role model positive academic
behavior. When it comes to managing crisis situations, Julia has spent countless
hours problem solving.
From September 9-September 14, Julia worked with a student who has
Bipolar disorder,
anxiety/depression, and self-harms. This student spent over 10 hours
talking with Julia
about how college has made her issues more challenging. Julia was
great at caring for the
student and making sure that she was getting the help that she needed.
In addition, Julia has
been working with at least 2 roommate conflicts to make sure that
students are able to co-
exist together. She was also woken up twice to deal with severe
intoxication problems on her
floor. Julia has balanced these situations and has made sure to take
time for herself as they
would arise. Julia has been an extremely hard working RA during September. She has
exceeded our
expectations and has done a remarkable job. Word Count: 600
