Origin of Program:

GR Speaks are weekly interest meetings that are available to our freshmeen residents. Since George Read Hall is one of the furthest residence halls from main campus, I thought it would be a great idea to bring some of the most popular student leaders to our residence hall to talk about popular jobs to have and clubs to be a part of.

Please give a short description of the program:

Every Tuesday at 9pm, residents have the chance to come down to our main lounge and meet different student leaders. Every week has a different theme. We have brought in the Blue Hen Ambassador Tour Guides, Study Abroad Ambassador, New Student Orientation Leaders, Resident Assistant, Student Fundraisers, and many more pretigious position to have. The student leaders will talk about their organization and why our freshmen in George Read should get involved. Our freshmen have the opportunity to ask questions from the student leaders about the time committment, requirements, benefits, and other factors. The student leaders never use powerpoints so the setting is a lot more personal. I have even noticed that the same freshmen come back every week and are not starting to bring other students to get the same connections they did.

Short evaluation of the program:

GR Speaks has been a wonderful addition to the George Read community. Our freshmen now do not have to walk 20 minutes to interest meetings because they are brought to their own residence hall.

How could this program be adapted to other campuses?

Other campuses can provide food at these meetings or even ask freshmen/students what clubs they want to be brought in. GR Speaks could also be done panel style.
