Origin of Program:

The idea for The Hunger Games program comes from the hype surrounding the recently release of the movie and from the building's residents interest in the series. This program was thought to be a social program at it's heart, but there is also the idea that it can be used to help residents find and enjoy reading books as well as the opening a discussion on the future of the United States and the world as a whole. This program with it's several different aspects was meant to help encourage bonding in the hall and let resents show their true colors.

Please give a short description of the program:

The Hunger Games is a program based on the book series The Hunger Games with three parts. First is a discussion over the first book in the series and showing the movie trailer. This is to help people who have never read the book get to know the main characters and to help introduce them to the world where the book takes place. After that there are a few questions to help residents think critically about how different aspects of the book are comparable to life today and society’s future. Next is a series of three games that represent different parts of the book. Residents are each given a card when they arrive assigning them to a district. On each card is a district seal which shows its industry and district number. The first game is a costume design contest that represents the opening ceremony in the book where people get their first impression of the competitors. Each team is given the same supplies to create a costume that represents their district’s industry. Second is a competition to create a marshmallow launcher. The residents are all given the same supplies to create a launcher. This represents the days spent in training learning new skills and ingenuity. Each team gets three shots and they are able to make modifications to their launcher in between the different shots. The final round is a game where the remaining players get a balloon tied around their ankle and the last player standing with their balloon unpopped is named the victor. This represents the competitors in the arena where they fight to their death. The popping balloons represent the sound of the cannon that in the arena means the death of a competitor. After each of the first 2 rounds 4 teams are eliminated. In the last round all, but one person is eliminated leaving them as the over all winner. The final event of the program is a Hunger Games version of Jeopardy over the first book in the series. There are categories based on the characters, creature, the districts, the events surrounding the games, and the games themselves. This is the final event so that people who had not seen the movie or read the book would be able to still participate based on the knowledge gained through the rest of the program.

Goals of the program:

The goals of this program were to educate residents about a popular book series that has a strong correlation to today's society and where it may be heading. Also this program was to attract all different types of residents by having several different activities that would interest them. It was also meant to challenge residents in several different aspects like the characters in the books are challenged. It challenged their creativity in the costume design. It challenged their ingenuity and inventiveness of them having to create a marshmallow launcher. It also challenged their dexterity and to a degree their athletic ability and stamina in the popping balloon challenge. Finally it challenged their minds with the trivia based jeopardy game. A goal of this program was to let residents have fun and bring the book to life and to encourage them to read. Also this program was used to help introduce residents to people in the building they might not know by splitting them up in teams as they arrive and not letting them choose their own teams.

Positive and lasting effects of the program:

The Hunger Games program helped residents meet new people with similar interests that they would not have meat otherwise. Some of the short term effects were to let residents be creative and helping them to think outside of the box and do different activities that they may not normally have done. This program helped them to develop skills that they might not normally use such as those used in the costume design and the creation of the marshmallow launcher. Some of the longer lasting effects would be that this helped introduce some residents to reading and could encourage them to branch out and find other books that they might enjoy and be able to share with others. Also this program helped residents to think about the future of society and how what we are doing now will affect others.

Short evaluation of the program:

The attendance of residents at this program made it successful. The different parts of the program went very well. It kept residents interested in the program that ended up running for around one and a half hours. The overall interest in The Hunger Games series was high due to the recent release of the movie which helped bring more residents to the program. The people at this program enjoyed being able to try so many different things and being able to work with new people. Even with having such a competitive edge to the program the different teams were able work well and encourage one another. After the teams were eliminated they were still able to participate in the events with the chance at winning the prize for the round as opposed to having nothing to do. This program had several good reviews from the people who participated in it.

How could this program be adapted to other campuses?

A way to adapt the program would be to have it based on another book or movie series, such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Avengers. The best time to have programs like this is near the release of a book, movie, or something of importance to the series that you are using. This Program is meant to be used as a social program, but it also could be used as an educational program to discuss the effect of society and also to look at a possible future for the United States. Also it can be used to show how some countries are better off than others and compare them to the hardships that are faced by the districts. It could be used as three different programs over the course of a weekend to help keep residents on campus.
