Please give a short description of the program:

Knitting Knights is a campus-wide program held for 4-8 hours at a time in an open-house style where participants can come and go as they please. Yarn, knitting needles, and crochet hooks are provided, and participants then make scarves or hats which will be donated to a local women's shelter via Victim Support Services. On the 19th, the program was held in the Centennial Main Lounge with movies, cookies, and hot chocolate to encourage community as well as service. On the 30th, the program was held in the SUB Down Under as part of Late Night Programming and thereby supporting other campus efforts to make ResLife and Truman life in general more appealing to students.

Goals of the program:

The program was designed to support the local Kirksville community by sending the proceeds (scarves and hats individually/hand-made by Truman students) to Victim Support Services. Another goal was to emphasize community on campus by keeping students active and on campus, and also by creating an event where people could utilize their talent/hobby for a good cause and also spend time with people of similar interests. Movies, etc created a comfortable atmosphere for building community as well.

Positive and lasting effects of the program:

Supporting VSS and the local community strengthens the connection between Kirksville and Truman in general, but also the personal impact and relationship of the university with the recipients of the items.

Short evaluation of the program:

Although advertising for the first round of the program went out late (two days before the program), the program was extremely successful. Some particpants even learned to knit or crochet simply to make a donation. With almost a week left to accept donations, they have currently collected 2 hats and 19 beautiful scarves. VSS is very excited to receive the donations and pass them on to women in need.

How could this program be adapted to other campuses?

To adapt this program should be easy. Follow similar planning efforts - at least two nights or a deadline for donations incase some participants don't finish their donations, providing yarn and needles, donate to a similar institution, etc.
