Origin of Program:

Jalene came up with the idea of Beautified while thinking of a way to bring the female residents of her house closer together, particularly because their house is divided into a couple of wings.

Jalene came up with the idea of Beautified early in November and began planning the program then. She knew she wanted to do something with facials and have a sort of spa night. While developing these ideas, Jalene decided that it would be important to educate her residents on outer and inner beauty. A few days before the program Jalene advertised in her hallways and expanded her program to include discussion topics about beauty and an activity to promote healthy self-esteem. The day of the program Jalene purchased the items necessary to make the various facials in addition to mirrors and puff paint and nail polish.

Please give a short description of the program:

Beautified was a great program designed to bring together the female residents in Jalene's house and give them the chance to learn about something together. Residents gathered in the 3 South lounge where Jalene helped them prepare several facial masks. Jalene explained the various recipes. She also taught the residents about different skin types and how to tell what kind of skin cleansing regime is best for their skin. As everyone's facial was setting, they had the chance to paint their finger and toe nails.

Next, Jalene led a discussion with the residents about beauty and how it is defined and portrayed in our society. Residents shared what beauty meant to them. The last part of this educational program included making something tangible that the residents could take away from the program. Everyone made a list of things that are beautiful about themselves that can't necessarily be seen while looking in a mirror. Using puff paints, residents then put these qualities on their own hand held mirrors.

Positive and lasting effects of the program:

The facial recipes were very simple, using few ingredients. The residents can easily recreate these on their own. This program also provided a nice chance for residents to get to know one another and create connections that still remain strong in the community today. the discussion brought up many good points that have altered the way residents view themselves and beauty. Many residents commented on how they enjoyed the mirror activity because it served as a constant self-esteem booster.

Short evaluation of the program:

Jalene did a wonderful job with this program. This was the first program she has developed on her own and she did a great job at letting her personality shine through via this program. Residents were able to get to know one another while learning useful lifelong lessons. Residents who were not at the program quickly heard about its success and regretted missing out.

How could this program be adapted to other campuses?

It would be quite easy to adapt this program to any other campus. Many smaller communities would benefit from this type of small, group program that incorporates activities and discussions. This program could be expanded to include other beauty-tips and further discussion on body-image, the role of the media, and healthy living.
