Origin of Program:

The ultimate goal of Homemade Holiday Gifts was to help the residents of Ryle Hall open their minds to creative gift ideas without having to spend a lot of money. The organizers hoped that the residents would go beyond their program and find other interesting and unique ways to give gifts for the holidays instead of just getting something from the store.

Please give a short description of the program:

Homemade Holiday Gifts is a program to help those that don't have the funds to buy a nice present to be able to give something to a loved one over the holidays. As a college student it can be difficult to have enough money to get a gift for every family member. Homemade Holiday Gifts corrected this situation by providing an affordable means to making a personal gift for someone. The residents of Ryle Hall congregated in the main lounge and gathered various ingredients in order to make a decorative hot cocoa mix. The cocoa mix was assembled in a jar and a chocolate covered spoon was placed inside so the individual receiving the gift would have something to stir the mix with. Gift cards were made for these presents so the final product could be ready to be placed in a stocking or under a tree.

Positive and lasting effects of the program:

The effects of this program not only provided something fun to discuss over break but helped the residents broaden their scope over fun ways to give gifts. In a worst case scenario, if a resident is stuck on a gift idea for the future and time and money are scarce, then this program should come in handy to help the resident come up with something on their own.

Short evaluation of the program:

The program went off very well with positive feedback. The organizers were very prepared and didn't go over budget and buy too much for their program. There was very little left over and the organizers cleaned up afterwards well.

How could this program be adapted to other campuses?

This program could be followed exactly as done by the organizers because of the success they had. Other gift items could possibly be made to possibly spark even more creativity of those in attendance. If cost is an issue, presenters may want to shoot for a smaller scale.
