Origin of Program:

Mari and I wanted to do a social progam that could allow people to get a snack while combinging the upperclassmen on my 3rd floor with the first year students. This allowed them to get a chance to mingle in a neutral way and to greet one another. It was also about the time that the weather was getting cold, so it acted to give some feel-good warmth during the chilly weather.

Please give a short description of the program:

Mari and I wanted to throw a social program between her floor of first year students and my floor of upperclassmen girls. We decided that we'd throw a smaller version of a spaghetti dinner, calling it the "spaghetti snack." We went shopping and purchased the ingredient needed, including what we needed to make homemade mini cheesecakes from scratch, and had a sign up outside our doors for people. We both had at least 20 people sign up, and we decided to cook in the basement kitchen of Morehouse. That night, Thursday November 20th, we allowed people to come downstairs at 5:30 for a quick bite to eat. We allowd them to head upstairs and eat in the lounge or the tables outside of the ballroom or the study room on the 1st floor. We had many people come back for seconds and to tell us that the food was very good. We purposely chose to do this activity to allow the older and younger groups of student to interact. We had a great turnout, even a few people who came toward the end requesting something to eat. We were able to keep the cost of the program very low, and Mari and I had an easy time setting up and tearing down. We even had a few volunteers help with the cleanup. Multiple groups came to ask that we do something like it again in the near future, meaning that everyone who came must have enjoyed themselves. The dessert was a big hit too, and it pulled in a few stragglers. All in all it was a really fun program to throw and let us say hi to a lot of people from both of our floors. I highly recommend that anyone looking for a fun social activity to steal our idea!

Goals of the program:

Allow students to meet and greet one another on other floors. There are older and younger students who came to this event, and now that everyone has had the opportunity to make some friends and settle into their routine, we thought it would be a good chance for us to make some quick food for the floors and allow the different ages to mingle. We also wanted to give people a quick break during their otherwise routine eventing by allowing them to stop and get some food just made for them in their own building. We had many people who came down in their pajamas and sweatpants.

Positive and lasting effects of the program:

The younger students got the chance to meet some of the older students they might otherwise never see. Being that many of them already have groups of friends established, we thought they'd be more willing now to meet some of the older students in the building. It also worked to help shatter the assumption that the older students don't come to programming. We had as many come from the 3rd floor of upperclassmen as the 2nd floor of first year students. Showing the younger classes that everyone can enjoy programming at any age will help cement good feelings toward RA programming for many more years for these students.

Short evaluation of the program:

We had a fantastic turnout and all the food was eaten. People were all willing to quickly sign the necessary forms, and we were able to throw a program for approximately $1.50 per person. Everyone who came said the food was great and that they enjoyed themselves immensely. We were asked if we could throw more just like it! All the food was eaten and people came back for seconds, which was reassuring because Mari and I were up late working on the homemade dessert.

How could this program be adapted to other campuses?

I think it'd work well with many other campuses or other buildings at Drake. Ours had the goal of allowing people of different classes to interact, but just throwing it socially for different floor to interact is a great idea too. It might also work for different buildings to interact, such as "Stalnaker 2nd floor and Carpenter 2nd floor" or something of the sort. We were able to buy the generics for the food and kept the price down significantly. Everyone who came was able to get a variety of food choices, including vegtarian, but someone could do this as a "How to eat cheaply" program or an "Organic vs. Non-Organic" taste test program.
