Origin of Program:

In a predominately freshman hall, there is typically roommate disagreements that occur when students return to campus in January. To proactively address this issue, the RA staff decided to spend a week in January encouraging residents to recognize how much they appreicate their roommate/hallmates.

Please give a short description of the program:

This week-long event involved five different events/activities designed to both celebrate roommate/hallmate relationships, as well as educate residents on how to be a positive roommate.

On Monday, the hall celebrated "Hug Your Roommate Day", which was a passive program that encouraged residents to hug their roommate that day.

Tuesday featured a "Create Your Own Memory Board" event where residents could design a memory board for their room. The residents used corkboard, fabric and ribbon to make a board that would hold photos of them and their roommate.

Wednesday was delivery day of Roommate Candygrams. Up through Wednesday afternoon, residents could write a sweet message of appreciation to their roommate, which was then delivered by the RA staff to the roommates along with a lollipop attached.

Thursday's highlight was the "Roommate Game" which allowed ten sets of roommates to compete in a gameshow designed to showcase how much they knew about one another. Modeled after the "Newlywed Game", roommates had to answer questions about one another and earned points if their answers matched up.

Finally, on Friday, every resident roommate received a Lifesaver and Airhead with tips on how to be a good roommate and avoid being a poor one.

Goals of the program:

- Roommates will recognize how much they appreicate one another.

- Residents will take time to think about their living situation and reflect on how they can both celebrate and enhance their own roommate relationship.

- Residents will actively participate in activities that allow them to demonstrate their committment to their roommate relationship, while also meeting/interacting with residents from different floors.

Positive and lasting effects of the program:

Residents responded extremely well to this weeklong program. It created a strong sense of community in the building, as a weeklong event created quite a bit of hype in the building. All residents were able to participate in at least one part of the event depending on their availabity and interest. The staff witnessed many residents showing each other how much they appreciate each other. Residents who participated in the Roommate Game had a great time and got to see commonalities between themselves and other pairs of roommates competing.

Short evaluation of the program:

This program was great! The students greatly enjoyed the events and the RAs were very excited about the turnout for each event. The goals were met by the variety of the events held during the week. Overall, it turned out very well.

How could this program be adapted to other campuses?

This is a program I would highly suggest be adapted to other campuses, as it is timely and proactively addresses roommate relationship issues. The program can easily be adapted by creating a Roommate Appreciation Week on a college campus. The specific events can be tailored based on the population of the specific building where it is being held.
