Please explain the outstanding contributions of the nominee during the month of nomination

A smile says a lot about a person. It can welcome and draw you in, making you want to stay for a while and talk to a person. Brooke Baxter’s smile is like this. When I met her, it was one of the first things I noticed. It complements her kind and warm nature perfectly. Talking to her is made easier by it. Her honesty is another quality of hers that I admire. If I ask for her opinion or advice, she will tell me what she thinks without judgement. That is why I am so glad she is my Residence Assistant or RA. Talking with Brooke has helped me open up more as a person. For my first one-on-one with her I was a little nervous because I had no idea what we would talk about. This might seem odd, but being in other people’s personal spaces makes me feel awkward so that only added to my anxiety. We went through my Mapworks, discussed my thoughts on being away at school, how I was adjusting, and if I was feeling homesick. Gradually, throughout the conversation, I began to unwind, and by the end I felt completely at ease and almost like I was talking to someone I had known for years. I really enjoyed getting to share my thoughts with someone who cared, and this first conversation with her is why I feel that she is one of the first people I came to trust at Appalachian. Besides our one-on-ones, hall council, and around the residence hall, I also got the opportunity to speak with her on a more personal level for one of her classes’ projects. She asked me questions about books I had read in high school and my favorite one, my own personal interest and favorites, and when and why I developed an interest in books. I also told her about the book I was working on, which is something I had never really told anyone about outside close family and friends. It meant so much to me when she told me she thought I would be brave enough to publish it one day. I know she will be able to achieve all she sets her mind to while touching so many more lives with her heartfelt and kind demeanor. There are many things I will look back on this year and they will bring me immense joy and happy memories. Meeting Brooke Baxter is one of them.
