Please explain the outstanding contributions of the nominee during the month of nomination

Brianna McDevitt is a Student Staff member of Northern Illinois University and assists non-traditional students in a role as a Community Development Assistant (CDA). I have been Brianna’s supervisor for two years and she never ceases to amaze me with her ability to volunteer for extra tasks. On a daily basis, Brianna volunteers to do check outs, take potential residents for a building tour or cover another staff member's shift during unexpected situations. In August, Brianna actively volunteered to complete extra work that supported the educational mission of our complex.

One of the main pillars of our residential curriculum is to create an inclusive climate for all students and staff members. For the new academic year, new CDAs were hired and added to the team. Usually, it is during official training time that returners and new staff members meet and get to know each other. This year prior to the official training dates, Brianna reached out to all staff members via email and asked each of them to respond with information about themselves such as their profile photo, preferred name, hubbies and interesting facts. Brianna compiled all the information and created a 6 by 4 feet bulletin board in the hall way of the main office to introduce the staff to the whole community. The bulletin board had a positive impact on the new staff members and made them feel welcome in the community when they officially started working for the university. The bulleting board also helped increase the visibility of the staff to the residents.

Also, in the month of August, Brianna worked in the main office as a Desk Assistant and used her spare time to create another bulletin board that would help the staff communicate more efficiently with duty coverage and rotation. The bulletin board is very creative and user friendly as compared to the previous ones. The attention to detail and the painstaking precision with which Brianna crafted every piece of the bulletin board is extraordinary. Almost every person who came to our main office noticed the bulletin board and marveled at Brianna's high level of ingenuity and creativity. One of the requirements of the CDAs in the month of August was to complete a bulletin board in their building before move–in day. For her bulging, Brianna created decorative foldable notes and meticulously stapled them to the bulletin board. The notes were not only pleasing to the eye, but they also carried useful educational messages for our residents who struggle with roommate conflicts. Besides exceeding the expectations for the bulletin board, Brianna created big welcome banners in the hallways of her building to welcome her new residents.

As a returning staff member, Brianna’s selfless and thoughtful actions helped set the tone for the entire team. During CDA training this month, many staff members heavily relied on Brianna for transportation and she used her car to transport them from the complex to training sites, which allowed the whole team to be on time at each training session. During in-hall training sessions, Brianna tremendously assisted the new staff members by sharing her own previous experiences and taking on leadership roles when needed. Brianna volunteered to facilitate the duty scheduling meeting and used her prior knowledge to guide the team in the scheduling process. She later volunteered to take the remaining scheduling tasks at home and during the next few days, she completed the whole duty schedule for August, September, October, November, and December. As a result of all that Brianna does for our community, I am pleased to nominate her for the month of August.
