Please explain the outstanding contributions of the nominee during the month of nomination

It is my pleasure to nominate Justin Tarbell as the advisor of the month for April 2018. Justin serves as the Craige Community Director (CD) at UNC-CH and has consistently gone above and beyond in his role as CD throughout the year and especially in April. In addition to his role as the CD of Craige, he serves as an advisor for Craige Community Government (CoGo) and UNC-CH's Residence Hall Association (RHA).

I have found my place at UNC-CH through Carolina Housing and RHA. Having Justin as my advisor has been the one of the greatest perks of being the Craige Community Governor! Throughout the year, Justin and I had a weekly meeting on Wednesdays at 3:15. Justin's workday ends at 5 pm and he would never schedule anything after our meeting in case I needed to continue talking through ideas or problems, which I often did. Justin describes his advising style as "hands off, ears on." As a self-proclaimed external processor, this has been invaluable for working through situations that I have faced as a residence hall governor, as a student, and as a friend and family member.

During the month of April, Craige was hosting its traditional event, the biggest event of the year. Even though this event is the CoGo's responsibility, Justin always offered to help me in any way that he could, especially when working with the University departments on parking, contracts for vendors, and safety. He consistently took time out of his schedule to check in and encourage me to take care of myself. He often asked me questions like, "do you have to be the one to do this, or can someone else?" to remind me that I am not an island and that we have a team for a reason. He also told me any time that I was worrying too much to remember the precedent I'd set throughout the year, which was to panic about events that ended up going very smoothly. He recognized my anxiety but reminded me that all I can do is my best. The program that was months in the making went very well with 400 residents in attendance and, again, Justin reminded me that I'd worried for nothing.

Justin is also our RHA at large advisor and has been there for every member of RHA executive board and other governors. He comes to meetings at least twice a month from 7:30-9:30 pm (remember that his workday officially ends at 5) to advise us and serve as a bridge between the Department of Housing and Residential Education and RHA.

Justin has constantly pushed me to be a better person, both in my interactions with others but also with myself. As a result of working with Justin this year, I am more cognizant of how much of myself I am giving to others and whether it is sustainable for my own wellbeing. I have also learned a great deal about programming, serving in Housing, leading my peers, and the importance of recognition. Justin is the reason that, on April 23rd, I was officially inaugurated as the UNC-CH NCC at the RHA end of year banquet.

However, don't just take it from me. At the same banquet where I was inaugurated, Justin was honored as the Advisor of the Year by all of the Residence Hall Association at large. Justin's influence spans much further than Craige Community. He has made a profound impact on my first year at Chapel Hill and it is for that reason that I believe he is fully deserving of this OTM.
