Ode to an Advisor who was beyond vital throughout October:

October, a month of prolonged exhaustion.Endless responsibilities pile upon the students you so fearlessly mentor yet you never stop to take credit for the time you’ve invested in us. Countless times you could’ve shut your office door and gone home yet you consistently stayed beyond typical hours to hash out our ambitious program goals or assist our NRHH and Residence Hall Association (RHA) executive boards with the behind the scenes work that goes into what we do.

While you have a busy life yourself, you never hesitated to show up to any and all of our meetings and plentiful new initiatives we hosted in October. From NRHH’s Mental Illness Awareness Week to RHA’s Fall Friendzy, you poured yourself into these cumbersome events and endured the time it took to not only plan and execute them, but also the time it took to see them through. Rather than leaving us to fend for ourselves and promote our events you stood on the front lines alongside us as we stormed the buildings with fliers and shouted it from the rooftops. You even stood outside events luring in unsuspecting passersby’s with your charismatic personality. Day after day throughout NRHH’s Mental Illness Awareness Week you showed up with a smile on your face, eager to cheer us on as we were rushed with groups of people waiting to participate in our de-stress events. Those who participated in Fall Friendzy were lucky enough to interact with you in your true form as you flung around mini pumpkins to persuade them to get involved with the event.

As the 2018 Regional Leadership Conference rolled around you persistently exceeded our expectations of the advisor role and didn’t shy away from our ideas when we had such high spirited ambitions. Not only did you make several trips to get us the materials we needed for conference preparation, you eagerly made time in your schedule to get involved in the creation of our roll call video and digital banner, a type of participation we were not expecting nor were we used to. As midnight rolled around the night these spirit items were due you stayed on campus sitting right beside us using your insane Photoshop skills and razor sharp eye to make them look perfect. The most admirable part of your conference involvement was the tenacity for learning that you possessed while attending the advisor sessions all while holding intense amounts of spirit for everything our delegation did.

While both NRHH and RHA executive boards can agree that you are a phenomenal support to all of the hard work we put in, we can all agree that you, Jackson Cardarelli, are a phenomenal motivator and challenger. Your follow through is impecca-bull, your kindness is insurmountable, and your love for the position is irreplacea-bull.

Thank you for all that you have done in your Advisor role within October.More importantly; thank you for all you have done for me within the hardest month of my life. Your outreach, check-ins, and words of affirmation and encouragement have made October beara-bull for me and I appreciate you tremendously. I appreciate you allowing me to mourn in front of you. I appreciate you listening to stories about my grandmother. And I appreciate you supporting me both as a friend and as a mentor.

Advising isn’t easy, But Jackson, you make it look flawless. Your grace, dedication, and charisma are just a few of the traits October highlighted, and they are just a few of the reasons why you deserve an October OTM.
