Please explain the outstanding contributions of the nominee during the month of nomination

Danielle Horton is a perfect example of an empowered woman on Central Michigan University’s campus. There is a quote by a very famous empowered woman that reminds me very much of Dani.

Maya Angelou once said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. Danielle really embodies this quote because of her dedication to spreading creativity. She speaks her truth, is strong, and courageous. Maya Angelo and Dani are not only similar with their empowerment, but they are also both poets. I have known Danielle for several months and each month she shows me a new side of her that makes me even more intrigued. However, this month in particular she has really shined through and has made strides to share her creativity on campus through spoken word.

Every other Sunday evening Danielle hosts an open mic night in the diversity center called D.O.P.E. It stands for Danielle’s Open-Mic Poetry & Entertainment. In November, she hosted the event on the 25th. Each Sunday that D.O.P.E occurs the crowds grow not only in size, but in passion. Danielle works hard to provide the safe space for these artists (including herself) to perform. She also usually has delicious snacks to help bring the smiles.

Apart from hosting D.O.P.E every other Sunday, Danielle also facilitated at the Get Hyped Conference hosted by NRHH. She led a workshop that discussed the importance of writing and art activism. She gave the residents in the workshop different prompts to write to and encouraged them to share if they felt comfortable. Dani made the space very safe, warm, and inviting. A few people, who have never performed before, read their art in front of the crowd. At the end of the Get Hyped Conference, the top five programs were voted on by all of the participants. Out of approximately 20 different programs, Dani’s won a spot in the top five. She did an amazing job not only sharing her own work but encouraging others to write and share their own. Danielle truly makes people feel relaxed and empowered to share their story.

Finally, towards the end of November, Danielle was invited to perform at Sweeney Hall’s 3rd annual Women’s Empowerment program. The program had a wonderful turnout and was very pleasant to attend. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Dani during this program. She was so happy to be there and excited to perform. Danielle was very supportive to all of the acts that went before her and brightened the room with her encouraging remarks. When it was Dani’s turn to perform, she truly wowed the crowd. She performed with such passion. She made the whole audience feel what she felt when she wrote the poems. This feeling really resonated and stuck with a lot of the audience members.

Danielle is an outstanding performer. She performs with such intensity and emotion that she cannot help but awe her crowds. Not only does she make her audience feel truly dope vibes, but she inspires them to write and share their own pieces. She always goes the extra mile to do what she loves: sharing her art. Danielle is a perfect example of someone who deserves recognition, especially during this month of November.
