Please explain the outstanding contributions of the nominee during the month of nomination

As a semester comes to a close, it can be easy for advisors to become complacent and ‘shut down’ until the next semester begins. Megan Swingle from Truman State University did not let the month of December nor the end of the semester stop her from continuing to shine in her position(s) and complete outstanding work. Megan is not only the advisor for the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the Bess Truman Chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), but she also advises an organization for first generation students known as First Gen and is the Residence Hall Director of Centennial Hall on Truman’s campus. Her dedication to her job and students she works with constantly amazes me, and she specifically demonstrated exceptional work during December 2018.

Megan is a consistent voice of reason and support in her role as advisor for RHA and NRHH. During December, she provided endless advice for the RHA Executive Board throughout a difficult situation and moving forward into next semester. Late in the semester, the RHA Treasurer resigned unexpectedly, and Megan was quick to offer solutions and ease the anxiety of members of the executive board. On December 6th, a new treasurer was elected through a special election process. Megan even helped suggest students to run for the position and was there to help facilitate the election and answer any questions. Her calming presence and voice of reason was much appreciated throughout this process.

The RHA Executive Board also hosts a retreat each semester to set goals and get to know one another better. Megan always works to provide both valuable professional development opportunities and fun games to promote. This semester, several members were unable to attend our retreat, so Megan made it a point to host an additional meeting in which everyone could attend in order to create goals as a collective rather than a select group. Megan assisted the RHA President to select a meeting time and plan the goal setting meeting. When the meeting had to be scheduled during finals week at 9:00 am, there was expected resistance from members of the executive board. Megan made it clear to everyone that this was a needed and important step for the organization to take and to have a positive attitude about the morning. During the meeting, Megan provided an outline for the executive board to discuss goals and establish individuals responsible for them. Her method created a productive and uplifting environment to accomplish our tasks.

Anyone who knows Megan Swingle knows she is a selfless leader and always willing to go the extra mile. Early in the month, I was personally struggling with several large decisions I had to make. Megan was incredibly willing and happy to meet with me to help talk through these decisions. She was very helpful and positive throughout the interaction and provided valuable insight to help guide me in the right direction. I have also witnessed her posting in a GroupMe with executive board members asking how others are doing or if she can help with anything. On December 12th, she even met specifically with the Moo Crew because they had mentioned being stressed about writing award bids. She is constantly ensuring we are keeping up with our personal wellness on top of our positional responsibilities.

Megan Swingle is a constant source advice, support, and genuine care for anything she does. In December, she showed what it means to be a phenomenal advisor and support. Her dedication and passion are why I am thrilled to nominate her as Advisor of the Month for December 2018.
