James Owen Said “Bad things can happen, and often do--but they only take up a few pages of your story, and anyone can survive a few pages.” This quote truly embodies the University Housing Resident Education office during the month of January. On January 7, 2019, University housing was told by University Facilities that we would need to close one of our Residence halls before the start of the spring semester and that we would have to move 330 students to new locations and that we did not have 330 beds on campus to house these students. Then 7 days later one of our Residence Director was rush to the hospital because her appendix had ruptured and she would need emergency surgery causing this staff member to be out of work for a month and miss the opening of the spring semester because of recovery. On top of these events, there was the normal day to day operation, and University housing made some decision in December that impacted the whole department and the way we function.

For some departments this would be more than one team can handle however this was the opposite for our department. We saw the whole department join forces and become a united team to cover everything and anything that was through at us by the two major events but also the day to day items. Someone on the outside looking in at our department would have thought this is just a normal day in housing however we were all processing and trying to keep up with everything. These events would have also caused the most team to fall apart and start pinning things against each other however that was not the case either. Instead, you saw a team that came together join forces and knocked the ball out of the park.

This team successfully moved 330 students to both on and off campus housing locations without one complaint from a parent or student and made the student who was having to handle this process feel like we were there with them every step of the way. We also help a residence hall that was without its RD, who also had 4 new staff members, open and successful execute everything that was asked of this building without blinking an eye. The team that works for Georgia Southern University truly rose to the occasion as said that the month of January will only take up a few pages of our book for this year and that we can get through anything you throw at us. As a member of the leadership team I can truly say that if it had not been for this team’s dedication, passion, willing to do whatever it takes, and commitment to our university these pages of this book would be very different.

During this month we saw team members step up and do things that we would not normally expect people to do. We also say team members say that they were willing to do whatever needed to be done so we could help the team be successful. Finally, we also saw student staff members come to the table and do whatever was needed of them some of it without us asking. One thing I can for sure say about this community and team is that we were willing to make the best out of a bad situation and that everyone on this team played a huge part in us being a successful community to all of our young housing Eagles.
