Origin of Program:

For my first bulletin board on the Compton Cookout, I was inspired by another RA, Brasilia Perez. Earlier this year she handcrafted a bulletin board focused on a series of racially-charged events which happened in winter quarter of 2010 at UCSD. The event was kicked off by an online invitation to the racist off- campus party called the "Compton Cookout," which was advertised as a party to celebrate Black History Month, although it was truly intended to mock the black community. The description of the invitation stated that attendees should come dressed in stereotypical black "ghetto" clothing. Tensions on campus grew to an all time high, but movements subsided by spring quarter of that year. The purpose of this passive program is to bring awareness to one of the most pivotal, albeit, uncomfortable histories of UCSD. Along with awareness of the event, the passive program does the first steps at explaining why the Compton Cookout affects students and faculty at UCSD.

The second bulletin board was inspired by Sexual Assault Awareness month, and was created by the Sexual Assault Resource Center on the UCSD campus. This bulletin was meant to bring awareness to sexual assault and survivors.

Please give a short description of the program:

This passive program is in the format of bulletin board located throughout Sixth College at UCSD. There are two Compton Cookout versions and two Sexual Assault Awareness versions.

Directly under the title of "Compton Cookout" in the middle of the board, there is a red rectangle with the words "A little bit of history on the Compton Cookout" with a printed screenshot of the Facebook post from 2010 inviting students to the Compton Cookout.

Around the printed screenshot, there are bubbles of information for context on what residents are reading. The different sections are: –What Happened? Here, it is explained that a group of university fraternities threw a racist party called the Compton Cookout. Later, a noose was found hanging in Geisel Library, and a month later a KKK hood was found on the Dr. Seuss statue on campus. As a result, the racial climate on campus grew more tense. –What Did Students Do About It? This gave a very small overview of which student organizations were effecting change. The main student organizations involved in rallying students and organizing marches were the Black Student Union (BSA) and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (M.E.Ch.A.). –How Did the University Respond? Here, it is stated that the university did not meet the standards of the students involved, so the BSU made a list of demands that they believed would make the university more racially inclusive, including the creation of resource centers for minority groups that still exist today. This section highlights that the university Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) requirement is due to those demands as well. –Want to Know More? Understanding that the bulletin could only scratch the surface of the complexities of the 2010 events, this section offers ideas to get more information.

For the Sexual Assault Awareness part, it went over a series of things for people to be aware of going into Sexual Assault Awareness month. It defines the parameters for clarifying consent in a relationship. It has 3 main components, (1) Ask, to explain what receiving consent means; (2) Listen, how to interpret verbal and nonverbal cues; and (3) Respect, to continuously respect your partner and their decisions. The bulletin board makes students more aware of sexual assault issues, in order to prevent bad situations from happening and increasing education.

Goals of the program:

The main goal of the Compton Cookout Bulletin is to simply bring awareness to events that happened at the University of California San Diego campus that has drastically affected how the university functions. There is a disconnect between student interests and what the university claims to be moving towards, in particular when talking about the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) requirement that has been in place since 2011. Part of that disconnect comes from a lack of knowledge on why the requirement is important, so the hope is that through passive programs like this as well as active programs dealing with similar topics, students will be exposed to more and more of the histories and contexts behind why the university is the way it is.

The Clarifying Consent board's goal is to take a stand against sexual violence. The Sexual Assault Resource Center has reminded us that April is designated as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Sexual assault is an issue that affects our entire community. The goal of SAAM is to raise awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals about their role in prevention.

Positive and lasting effects of the program:

The main purpose of the passive programs are to educate students in an informal way. For the Compton Cookout one, students can walk away knowing more about the history of their own institution. Through that learning process, students begin to question the "whys" of their institution's processes and actions. The events of 2010 showed, that student collectives have power. Therefore, it is important to continually remind students they possess that power, especially years after the flame of resistance has died down significantly and a dangerous apathy begins to settle amongst the student population. Although a bulletin board may not create large-scale change on a campus of just under 30,000 undergraduate students, it does some of the ground work in helping that the power of the student body is not forgotten.

For the Clarifying Consent portion, students should have an increased awareness about sexual violence and what consent truly means, as well as how to receive consent from someone. Sexual assault is an issue that affects our entire community so it is important to educate first and second year students about how they can be better partners.

Short evaluation of the program:

Without constant supervision to monitor who is passing by the bulletin board, who is reading it, and how those who are reading it are responding, it is difficult to gauge the impact that the program has on students. At the end of the day, that is true of most passive programs.

As far as the content on the bulletin boards itself, there are areas with empty space on both styles that could have been used to elaborate more on certain parts of the explanations. There also could have been a more extensive list of additional resources that residents could go to for more information, as they may not be comfortable going to their resident assistant directly to ask questions. Both the Compton Cookout and Consent portions could have used additional resources and content, such as posting where further information could be found or conversation spaces.

Overall, the bulletin boards both do a great job of getting the attention of residents passing next to it, and it educates them just a little bit more on the history of their institution.

How could this program be adapted to other campuses?

When it comes to social justice-themed passive programs, a lot of the topics covered are universal, although their effects on a particular campus may carry a different weight due events that have happened in the past. On that note, each campus also has its own history with its own flaws. Because of this, this program could easily be adapted to whatever is one of the most impactful events or social justice issues surrounding a certain campus. Since the objective of this passive to to foster critical thinking and resistance to an apathetic student body and non responsive administration, the actual story or topic of choice is less important than the acknowledgement of a wrongdoing in the institution's past, its affects on the marginalized community and the university community as a whole, and the push for the institution to do better. If those points come across, the passive program has been successfully translated to the campus that adapts this program.
